4 Australians who might be playing their last ODI World Cup in 2023

Usually, teams and even players plan their next step keeping in mind a big trophy event. In cricket, ODI World Cup is one such competition. Australia is one squad that is looking really strong this time around. The team possesses some experienced names, many of whom have played a lot of cricket in India, which will host the event. That said, it could be the last tournament for some of these players. In fact, these cricketers could even play their last game at the event. On that note, here, we take a look at four Australians who might be playing their last ODI World Cup in 2023.

1) David Warner

In around 140 ODIs, so far, Warner has made more than 6000 runs. It is a terrific record and in recent times, he is arguably the best all-format batter for his nation. However, aged 36, this could be his last event. During the tournament, the southpaw will turn 37.

Warner has already hinted at his plans after retirement. Moreover, it is likely that Warner could switch to T20 cricket for the final few years of his career. Warner might target to play in the 2024 T20 World Cup as the last assignment in his international cricket career.

2) Mitchell Starc

Mitchell Starc is one of the Australians who might be playing their last ODI World Cup in 2023. When it comes to ODI cricket, Starc had been a terrific performer. Especially at the World Cups, he has an exceptional record.

However, Starc’s record, especially in the death overs, has not been great recently. Moreover, he has had to suffer a lot of injury issues. Therefore, Starc might sacrifice this format and could focus on Tests or might altogether shift to T20 cricket.

3) Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell will be a key player for Australia at the ODI World Cup. Firstly, Maxi is a great player of spin and moreover, he is more than a useful spinner. On his day, he could easily get through 10 overs with the ball.

Maxwell has a lot of experience playing in India and will be important for his team’s plans. After the event, though, Maxwell might begin to focus on franchise cricket as he will be 35 years old by the end of this year. He has also had his share of injury issues and might opt to focus only on the shortest format of the game.

4) Steve Smith

Steve Smith is also one of the Australians who might be playing their last ODI World Cup in 2023. Australia’s most important batter will, of course, be Steve Smith. A superb player of spin, Steve is known to step up on the big stage and the upcoming World Cup will be the best opportunity for him to do that.

Although Smith’s best format is ODI, it won’t be a surprise if he might struggle to adapt to the demands of the modern style of ODI cricket. Moreover, Steve would want to further cement his legendary status as a Test cricketer and might focus a lot more on the five-day format. With the next WC still four years away, it is not a surprise if the 2023 edition will be his last one.
