Indian squad for the upcoming World Cup: A long and tormenting wait finally met its conclusion as BCCI announced the squad for the imminent T20 World Cup. In a dynamic manoeuvre, they chose MS Dhoni to mentor the squad during the tournament.
Another welcome choice that relieved the fans was the addition of Ravichandran Ashwin in the T20 squad. India will kickstart the tournament with a clash against their arch-rivals, Pakistan, on the 24th of October.
The blend of experience and youth in the Indian squad
A major moot for debate before the announcement of the squad is whether Kul-Cha will be chosen despite being out of form for a while. The primary Indian cricket body substituted them for the likes of Ashwin and Axar Patel, whose spot may be decided on the premise of his performances in the upcoming IPL.
The Indian team displayed a decent mélange of experience and excitement as novices like Suryakumar Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy and Ishan Kishan will come in handy to the experienced likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohamed Shami will be the three pacers included in the side, while Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja will be the two all-rounders. Shardul Thakur, Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Chahar were included in the list of standby players.
Dhoni will play a major role in shaping the fortunes of the tournament
The fact that Dhoni will be the mentor shall prove to be a massive catalyst ahead of the glamorous extravaganza. He captained the Indian squad in their maiden essay in the T20 World Cup and won it.
In the preceding edition of the tournament, India was ousted in the semi-finals as West Indies ran amok against the mighty Indians despite a rollicking batting display from Kohli and Dhoni. The Indians will be hellbent to make amends to the tournament for their last decade of disappointment.
India’s squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup: Virat Kohli (Capt), Rohit Sharma (vc), KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Rahul Chahar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami.
Standby: Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar and Shreyas Iyer
Shardul Thakur has been a massive success in the longest format of the game but when it comes to white-ball cricket, despite being a wicket-taker, he has also been battered inside out by the batsmen. Deepak Chahar, on the contrary, is a pretty decent bowler but has his shares of mistrust with consistency. Shreyas Iyer’s recent form has been highly questionable, but he has validated his worth previously. The second installation of the tournament can be a massive game-changer for all three.
