3 possible opening combinations for India at the 2022 T20 World Cup

Team India is exploring options with regards to the opening combination before the 2022 T20 World Cup. The likes of Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav have also opened in a T20I inning, so far. This is to help India adapt to its new approach of an aggressive start to the innings. Hence, in this context, it would be interesting which combination the management will pick for the mega-event in Australia this year. On that note, here, we take a look at the three possible opening combinations for India at the 2022 T20 World Cup.

1) Rohit Sharma – KL Rahul is the most likely combination for India at the 2022 T20 World Cup

In the T20 World Cup last year, India utilized this duo at the top of the order. Since then, they have not got a lot of chances to play together due to various reasons.

However, if both are available, India might go back to them. Yes, the left-right combination might not be there but KL Rahul is one of the best T20 openers that India has. Rohit Sharma cannot be included anywhere else in the XI. Therefore, Rahul Dravid might opt for this duo.

2) Rohit Sharma – Rishabh Pant

The Rohit Sharma-Rishabh Pant partnership is one of the possible opening combinations for India at the 2022 T20 World Cup. Rishabh Pant is failing to do well consistently in the middle order in T20Is. However, a lot of options open up if he opens the batting.

In fact, Pant started his career as an opener. His attacking intent gives India an edge at the start of an inning. Therefore, we could see this duo also open the batting in the T20 WC.

3) Rohit Sharma – Ishan Kishan

In the 2021 T20 World Cup, Ishan Kishan was used as an opener. After the event, too, in the absence of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan was one player who consistently played at the top of the order. He has also justified this by producing a few good performances.

However, with the management trying out Pant and with KL Rahul set to return, Ishan’s chances are looking bleak. Nevertheless, having invested in his skills as an opener, India will surely make use of the Jharkand lad in the coming months.
