The BCCI founded the Ranji Trophy in 1935 and since then, it is annually staged across different venues in India. The domestic first-class cricket championship is played in India between multiple teams.
For the record, the competition comprises of 38 teams, with all 28 states in India. On the other hand, four of the eight union territories have at least 1 representation.
Not many know that the competition is actually named after “Ranjitsinhji” who is the first Indian cricketer who played international cricket. He was popularly referred to as ‘Ranji’.
Ranji Trophy is the perfect tournament for Indian players to showcase their mettle in order to earn a call-up to the Test squad. Over the years, several Indian players have taken this Ranji Trophy route to make it to the Test squad.

1. Arpit Vasavada
Saurashtra batsman Arpit Vasavada is one of the players who might get a chance to play for Team India in the longest format of the game. In fact, he has been statistically very impressive in numbers by finishing the tournament as the second-highest run-scorer. He scored 907 runs including a double century in the semi-final against Karnataka.
2. Sarfaraz Khan
Sarfaraz Khan is one of the names that keep reverberating in the minds of the selectors. The 25-year-old is yet to make his debut for Team India in Tests. In fact, the right-handed batsman has been the best batsman for the Mumbai cricket team for three seasons in a row. In this season’s Ranji Trophy tournament, he accumulated 556 runs in 6 innings at an average of 92.67.
3. Shams Mulani
Shams Mulani is one of the players who could earn a call-up to the Indian cricket team after performing well in the Ranji Trophy 2023. He has been among the leading wicket-takers for the Mumbai cricket team in the last few seasons. Notably, he has been really good in this season where he took 46 wickets in 7 games.
