It has been a rare occasion where nations have turned it around after a batting collapse on the first day in a Test match. India pulled off one such historic victory at the Oval after being humiliated at Leeds in the third Test of the series.
It needed some deep digging by the bowlers in the first innings and an extraordinary collective showdown by the batters in the second innings after a heroic ton by Rohit Sharma paved the way for India probing England.
Fifth-day heroics for India
Despite a decent start by the two openers of England, Hameed and Burns, it was Shardul Thakur who opened the floodgates for India. After he removed Rory Burns, substitute Mayank Agarwal ran Dawid Malan out, portending England’s downfall.
That is when the apocalypse for England started, with Bumrah and Jadeja wreaking havoc in a span of just 6 runs. The first to depart was Haseeb Hameed after a well constructed 63. Trying to play in the line of the leg stump, he completely missed Jadeja’s spin, and it clicked the bails.
Bumrah followed it with an absolute Blitzer to claim Ollie Pope by knocking his timbre over. He even bettered his release by claiming Jonny Bairstow with a peach of a yorker.
Jadeja came back to claim Moeen Ali with a soft dismissal to make it 147 for 6. After a brief period of resistance from an in-form Root and Woakes, Shardul Thakur once again proved to be the difference as he bagged Root.
The moping up of the English tail
He banged it hard with a delivery drifting in towards Root and the English captain played it down onto his own stumps. Chris Woakes and Craig Overton didn’t last long as Umesh Yadav struck twice to bring India inching closer to the victory.
Umesh Yadav struck the telling blow of the night as he wrapped up the English innings by removing Anderson with a brilliant delivery that ended in the gloves of Pant.
Twitter paid back England in the same coin that was thrown at them after India’s ignominious drubbing in the third Test of the series.
